Youth lacrosse uses rules suited to the format and division. Team counts, field dimensions, checking and substitutions can differ from the adult game and from another youth league.

Get the exact rulebook

Ask the program for the season’s governing rules and local modifications. USA Lacrosse’s current rule resources include separate youth materials and comparison charts. Keep the correct division’s information handy rather than memorizing an oversimplified offside rule.

Five questions for the first week

1. How many players are on the field in this division?

2. What contact and stick checking are permitted?

3. How are possession and play restarted?

4. What substitution process does the league use?

5. Which equipment standards and goalkeeper rules apply?

Do not assume that all substitutions happen during a stoppage or that all formats use the same offensive and defensive player limits. Those are rulebook questions, not universal lacrosse facts.

Learn from situations

After a game, choose one confusing moment and describe where the ball and players were. Ask the coach to explain the applicable rule. A concrete example is easier to understand than a collection of slogans about staying onside.
