The first season is a chance to learn the game alongside your child. Start with the program’s format and age division rather than trying to memorize every rule used in college lacrosse.

Learn which game the team plays

Ask the coach which rulebook applies, what local modifications are used and whether the group rotates positions. Boys’ field, girls’ field and introductory formats differ. A goalkeeper’s needs also differ from a field player’s.

Confirm equipment before buying

Use USA Lacrosse’s equipment requirements with the program’s list. Arrange fitting help and ask about loaners. Required equipment is a separate purchase decision from a favorite tee or sideline hoodie. Do not assume all players need the same helmet or pads.

Make the first month easier

- Keep practice, game and pickup information in one place.

- Label the stick, water bottle and bag.

- Ask where weather cancellations are posted.

- Find the appropriate contact for registration, equipment and coaching questions.

- Leave room for rest and other activities alongside lacrosse.

Watch without needing every answer

Notice how players move into space, communicate and help regain possession. When a call is confusing, note the situation and use the beginner rules guide afterward. Cheer for effort and teamwork as well as goals.

Let the player’s experience lead

Ask what was fun and what they would like to try next. Avoid turning every ride home into a performance review. Our coach-parent communication guide offers a calm way to raise questions. Beginners belong in the game while they are still learning it.
