Back to Basics: Wall Ball & Ground Balls Win Games

In a sport that’s constantly getting faster, the players who stand out are usually the ones who never stopped doing the simple stuff. If you want cleaner catches, quicker releases, and more confidence with the ball, it’s time to get back to the basics — wall ball and ground balls.

Wall Ball: Your Best Teammate

Wall ball is the fastest way to level up your stick skills because it gives you thousands of reps without needing anyone else. The wall doesn’t care if you’re tired, if it’s cold, or if you ‘almost’ caught it. It gives you instant feedback — every single throw.

Keep it simple and consistent. Ten focused minutes a day beats one heroic session once a week.

A Simple Wall Ball Routine

  • 50 right hand (quick sticks, no cradle)

  • 50 left hand (same speed, same form)

  • 25 catch-switch-throw (hands together, clean transfer)

  • 25 one-hand cradle + throw (control under pressure)

Ground Balls: Possession Wins Games

Everyone loves goals. Coaches love ground balls. Ground balls are extra possessions — and extra possessions turn into wins. The best players treat every loose ball like it’s the last play of the game.

3 Ground Ball Rules (No Excuses)

  1. Get low early — hips down, chest over the ball.

  2. Run through it — don’t stop your feet at the scoop.

  3. Protect and move it — secure, shoulder check, then pass.

Back to basics isn’t going backwards — it’s building the foundation that lets you play faster when it matters. Grab your stick, find a wall, and make the boring reps your competitive advantage.
