Before buying a bag full of equipment, identify the player’s game format, age division and role. An introductory non-contact session may have different requirements from competitive field lacrosse. Goalkeepers also need equipment that field players do not.

Check the requirements before shopping

Ask the program for its current equipment list and any loaner options. Use USA Lacrosse’s official equipment requirements to check the relevant standards, then confirm local league rules. Buy protective equipment for its fit, condition and required certification rather than its color or brand story.

Inspect fit and condition

Have an appropriate coach or equipment specialist check how the equipment fits before the first practice. Follow each manufacturer’s fitting and care instructions. Loose fasteners, cracks, damaged padding or uncomfortable pressure deserve attention before use. Do not cut gloves, drill helmets or alter protective parts to make them easier to wear.

Separate clothing from protection

A tee or hoodie can express team pride and add comfort off the field. It cannot substitute for required protective equipment. Check with the coach before adding a layer beneath equipment, and keep loose accessories out of play.

Pack the equipment list, a labeled water bottle and the team’s contact information. Our youth injury-prevention guide explains the broader questions to raise with the program. Getting the basics checked is a useful first step; no equipment or article can guarantee an injury-free season.
