Trying a Lacrosse Position: A Player-and-Coach Worksheet
Updated: 1 day ago
Choosing a position is a learning conversation, not a personality test. Start with the team’s format and the opportunities available to this player.
Four questions for the player
What part of practice is enjoyable? Which responsibility would you like to understand better? What feels confusing? Would you like a short supervised trial in another role?
Write the answers without forcing a permanent decision. A beginner does not have to start at midfield, and being quiet or energetic does not determine a position.
Four questions for the coach
Which roles does this age division use? Do players rotate? What is the first responsibility to learn in the proposed role? What equipment or instruction is needed before trying it?
Goalkeeper is a separate equipment and coaching conversation. A longer defensive stick may also depend on division rules and the team’s actual assignment.
Review after the trial
Ask what the player noticed and what they would like to practice next. Judge the learning experience rather than one mistake or one unusually successful play.
Our positions overview explains the broad responsibilities. Use the applicable official rules and field diagrams for player counts and movement restrictions. This worksheet helps explore a role; it does not assign one based on body type, personality or a universal recommendation to try midfield first.
