A first stick should help a player learn the game they actually play. A favorite color or professional setup comes after legality, suitable handling and a realistic budget.

Confirm the format

Tell the coach or shop the player’s age division, game format and likely role. Ask which dimensions and pocket rules apply. Boys’ and girls’ equipment rules differ, and a youth defense or goalie setup needs its own discussion.

Compare three practical options

A program loaner can be useful for an introductory session. A complete beginner stick can simplify the first purchase. A used stick may be an option when someone knowledgeable can check its condition, suitability and legal pocket.

The least expensive option is not helpful if the player cannot use it in their division. The most expensive option is not automatically necessary for learning basic skills.

Ask for handling and maintenance help

Let the player hold the candidate stick and ask an instructor to demonstrate the relevant fundamentals. Find out who can help with pocket adjustments and which changes the manufacturer permits. Do not cut a shaft using a player-height formula without checking the applicable rules and instructions.

Keep the rules with the purchase

Use USA Lacrosse’s current rule resources, confirm local modifications and keep product instructions. Our position-specific questions can guide the conversation.

Make the first decision about a suitable legal tool for learning. More specialized choices can follow when the player’s role and preferences become clearer.
