A first stick should match the player’s game format and league rules before it matches a favorite professional’s setup. Position matters, but so do youth modifications and the player’s ability to handle the stick comfortably.

Bring these questions to the coach or shop

- Which stick rules apply to this age division and format?

- Will the player rotate positions before choosing one?

- Is a beginner complete stick suitable, or is there a reason to select separate parts?

- Can the program loan a stick for an introductory session?

- Who can check pocket legality and help maintain it?

Attack and midfield

Ask about a legal field-player setup suited to learning catching, throwing and ground balls. Do not assume one adult specification fits every youth division.

Defense

A longer stick is not automatically the right beginner purchase. Ask whether the division permits it and whether the player is actually being assigned that role.

Goalkeeper

A goalie stick and goalkeeper equipment are separate decisions from a field-player purchase. Arrange qualified coaching and proper fitting before a trial session.

Our first-stick buying guide explains how to compare budget, handling and legality. Use the official rules for the applicable dimensions and pocket requirements. Do not cut a shaft to a height-based formula without checking both the rules and manufacturer instructions.
