Starting lacrosse does not require buying every item in the sporting-goods aisle. Confirm what the program requires, borrow where appropriate and add optional apparel after the essentials are sorted out.

Before buying anything

1. Confirm the game format and age division.

2. Ask whether the player is starting as a field player or goalkeeper.

3. Request the program’s current equipment list and rulebook.

4. Ask about loaner equipment, introductory sessions and recommended fitting help.

5. Check registration, membership, practice and travel costs alongside equipment costs.

Build the practice bag

Pack a legal stick suitable for the format, correctly fitted required protective equipment, footwear appropriate to the surface and a labeled water bottle. Add any uniform item the program specifies. Follow manufacturer instructions for fitting and inspecting equipment rather than improvising modifications.

Use the official equipment requirements with the coach’s checklist. Our girls’ starter guide and boys’ starter guide provide separate introductions. Neither a generic shopping list nor another player’s bag is a substitute for your division’s requirements.

Add clothing thoughtfully

For travel, sidelines and everyday wear, start with a tee the player likes and a layer suited to the weather. Compare the specific product’s measurements with a garment that fits; youth and adult size letters are not interchangeable. These are comfort purchases, not protective equipment.

Before the first session, check the arrival time, pickup plan and where a parent can ask questions. A prepared beginner belongs just as much as someone who has played for years.
