Girls’ Field Lacrosse: Getting Started
Updated: 15 hours ago
Girls’ field lacrosse has its own equipment, rules and beginner progressions. Start with the program’s age division and current requirements rather than buying the same kit used in boys’ field lacrosse.
Ask the program first
Confirm which rules and youth modifications apply, whether the first session is an introductory format and whether sticks or equipment can be borrowed. Ask about registration costs, practice locations and who can help with fitting.
Equipment depends on the role
Use USA Lacrosse’s official equipment page. Field-player requirements and goalkeeper requirements are different; a goalie is an important exception to general statements about girls’ helmets or padding. Do not treat arm and shoulder pads as a normal upgrade path for every girls’ field player.
Learn the first skills
Begin with scooping, catching, throwing and cradling using instruction suited to the game. USA Lacrosse’s girls’ beginner videos provide demonstrations. A coach can adapt practice to the player’s experience and confidence.
Prepare for the first session
Pack the required equipment, a labeled water bottle and the arrival/pickup details. Choose comfortable clothing that the program permits. Optional branded apparel can come later; it is not a prerequisite for participation.
Read the parent’s first-season guide and ask what the player enjoyed after practice. Learning and belonging come before pressure to select a permanent position or perform like an experienced teammate.
