Passing Accuracy: A Target Activity for Beginners

Passing accuracy is easier to assess when the setup stays clear. Choose a target, a manageable distance and a receiving task the player understands.

Begin with the demonstration

Watch the matching catching and throwing lesson in USA Lacrosse’s beginner videos. Ask a coach to check the motion. Passing is not an instruction to strike the center of the ball as if using a bat or racquet.

Set one target

Use a partner or suitable permitted wall with an appropriate ball and equipment. Keep the area clear and give the receiver enough space. A coach should choose the starting distance and adjust it to the pair.

Repeat, pause and review

Use a short set at the same target and count controlled throws/catches. Pause to apply one cue. Change only one variable, such as distance or a simple movement, when the setup is working. Retrieve missed balls after the activity pauses rather than throwing through someone collecting them.

Make the observation useful

Record the target, distance and one question. A repeatable activity makes comparison easier than simply demanding harder throws.

Read catching and throwing fundamentals for the fuller beginner session and the wall-ball calendar for an optional planning example. No fixed number of passes is required for every player.
