Learning a dodge and choosing when to use it are different tasks. Start with questions about space, control and the next action instead of trying to perform every dodge in one session.

Choose one practice focus

Ask the coach which movement suits the player's current experience. Learn it slowly in a clear area before adding a defender. The coach should adapt instruction for the player's stick, game format and division rules.

Look beyond the first movement

Before starting, identify where the player can finish under control. After the movement, ask whether there is space to continue, a teammate to pass to or a reason to reset. An unopposed route-choice activity lets a beginner discuss those options without contact.

Add difficulty gradually

Change one variable at a time: pace, direction or a coach-selected cue. A coach should decide when opposed practice is appropriate and explain the applicable contact and checking rules first. No named dodge guarantees separation from every defender.

Review the decision

Ask what the player noticed before moving, what changed afterward and whether the next action was manageable. Use one observation to plan the next attempt rather than counting a rushed sequence as progress.
